“I wrote over a dress” said J.K. Rowling and now Helda

I wrote about a dress! Last night I was having a conversation with a friend of mine about writing, I told him that I have been suffering from writer’s block for the past two years and he said; “that’s not writer’s block. That’s laziness” Listen! That’s not what I wanted to hear, I wasn’t even … Continue reading “I wrote over a dress” said J.K. Rowling and now Helda

An Open Letter to the #OYW2018 Community.

Dear #OYW2018 fam, Last week I took to the stage to share my story with you at the One Young World Summit. A few minutes before going on stage, I was in the bathroom trying to find a good reason why I should speak. I wanted to change my mind because I didn’t know how … Continue reading An Open Letter to the #OYW2018 Community.

Celebrating Esther Kalenzi: The generous queen with music under her feet.

I enjoyed sitting down with Esther Kalenzi to do this interview. She is such an amazing and inspirational soul.

ZIMBA WOMEN

By Mary Helda Akongo

Esther Kalenzi is the type of woman that Nikki Rowe wrote about. “She is a rare soul, she has this infectious energy that makes you want to run next to her, she belonged to no one but herself & to anyone that was yet to understand themselves, found the missing pieces in her presence.”

She has laughter in her eyes, music under her feet (yes, she really loves dancing), strength in her soul, and love in her heart. It is these exceptional qualities that she so joyfully relies on to go out and create a better future for underprivileged children in Uganda through her foundation; 40 days over 40 smiles.

40 Days Over 40 Smiles Foundation (40-40) is a Kampala based independent, youth-led, charity organization founded in 2012, to support education (literacy and expression), health and livelihood for vulnerable children.

A few days ago I had the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C for the World Bank and IMF Spring Meetings. My first real experience started right before we landed when I discovered this disease called turbulence. We were an hour or so from landing when the plane started going berserk. I was seated at … Continue reading Globetrotting Tales. Washington D.C Part 1: Turbulence and my sins.

-A tender soul

-A relentlessly thoughtful character

She has outrageously spoilt me with her doting person

-The winner of the 25 under 25 Internet Society

-An amazing rambling internet writer

-The one with the women central to her daily agenda

She has ME twice, in her heart (smiling)

-A poet of the word

-The mistress of words unconfined in her

-Creator of a world with her beautiful thoughts

and mind.

Now let me warn you

-Intelligent, yes she is

-Smart, yes

-Beautiful, absolutely

earth together.

The Ugandan Government continues to mock us as more women are being murdered.

By Mary Helda Akongo Last night, I lay in my bed pondering upon the events that had happened in the last 24 hours. I like to lay in the dark thinking about how my day was until I surrender to the bewitching yearnings of sleep. As I was doing that, I found myself tiptoeing to … Continue reading The Ugandan Government continues to mock us as more women are being murdered.

She is learning how to love herself.

She looked into his eyes. A smile broke out on her face. She would look into his eyes and never tire of it. She loved getting lost in them because that is how she found herself. She felt beautiful and worthy. Until the day he looked away, his eyes became another's. She felt empty, lost, … Continue reading She is learning how to love herself.
